Hand-Painted Customs vs. Nike By You

Both routes end with a pair nobody else pulled off the shelf — but they solve different problems. Nike By You is factory personalization inside Nike's guardrails. A hand-painted custom is original artwork applied to a shoe by a person. Here's how they actually compare on freedom, cost, durability, and time.

When Nike By You is the better call

If you want a clean two-tone colorway of a current model, a simple monogram, or a straightforward gift, the factory program is efficient and predictable. You get a brand-new shoe with a factory warranty and no donor pair to source.

When a hand-painted custom wins

Choose a painted commission when the idea can't be expressed with flat color blocks: a gradient fade, a mural across both panels, wedding or team colors matched exactly, a tribute pair, or a retro silhouette Nike never enabled for personalization. It's also the only route that lets you restore and redesign shoes you already love instead of buying new ones.

How we build a painted pair

  1. 1. Design consult — you describe the theme; we mock the colorway in the Design Studio.
  2. 2. Prep — deglaze and strip factory finish so paint bonds to the leather.
  3. 3. Paint — thin, cured coats of Angelus acrylic leather paint, layered by hand.
  4. 4. Finish — matte or gloss finisher topcoat, then a full flex and cure cycle.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between hand-painted customs and Nike By You?

Nike By You is a factory personalization program: you pick from preset colors and materials on supported silhouettes, and Nike manufactures the shoe. Hand-painted customs start from an existing pair and are repainted by an artist using leather paints, so any artwork, gradient, texture, or logo-free design is possible on almost any silhouette.

Are hand-painted sneakers durable?

Yes, when done properly. We use Angelus acrylic leather paint with a deglazer prep, thin cured coats, and a finisher topcoat. That system flexes with the leather instead of cracking. Factory Nike By You paint is applied to the material before assembly, so it is durable too, but it cannot be changed later.

Which is cheaper, Nike By You or a custom painter?

Nike By You usually costs a small premium over retail for the base shoe. A hand-painted 1-of-1 starts around $350 plus the donor pair, because it is hours of manual artwork. You are paying for originality, not manufacturing.

How long does each option take?

Nike By You typically ships in about three to five weeks. A Boogie Lab commission is usually two to four weeks from approved design, and we can quote rush timelines for events.

Can I put a logo or licensed character on a custom?

We do not reproduce third-party trademarks or licensed characters. We design original artwork inspired by a theme you describe, which is also what keeps the pair genuinely 1-of-1.
